Dear fellow members of the Danish-UK Association

Christmas is successfully behind us and we can now turn our full attention to the new year. For all of us at Scandinavian Airlines the holiday season meant a lot of busy flights bringing friends and families together and taking travelers to new and exciting destinations.

In December last year we published our full year financial result. Although the results were not in line with budget and expectation, in a challenging environment we have again returned a solid profit for the fifth consecutive year. During these past five years we have been through a massive transformation where we have significantly reduced cost at the same time as investing extensively in our product and customer offering. In the UK we have driven efficiency through centralization, digitalization and new ways of working. Today our UK commercial organization is only a fraction of the size it used to be and yet we are more profitable and deliver more sales than ever before.

SAS invest in the UK Market

This winter and later in the summer of 2020 we will expand our network from the UK. The highlight of the winter is a new non-stop flight from London Heathrow to the Scandinavian Mountains, where you can explore the best skiing in Scandinavia’s largest ski areas – Sälen in Sweden and Trysil in Norway. The slopes are only a very short transfer from the airport and with more than 250 ski slopes and over 150 ski lifts you will never get bored.

In addition to our many departures from Heathrow we also offer a daily service from London Stansted to Copenhagen and next summer you will be able to fly non-stop from Stansted to Oslo.

It has been great to see such a strong support to SAS in the UK market during the last years. Despite the political uncertainty the demand for SAS flights to Scandinavia is still increasing and we can conclude that our investment in a UK base for aircraft and crew was the right thing to do back in 2017. The UK base gives us the ability to further invest in the market and to connect the UK and Scandinavia in an efficient way.

Your reason to travel is SAS’ reason to fly more sustainably

We are currently facing major shared challenges around our global impact on climate and the environment. SAS takes responsibility for its part in this and aim to ensure that we all can continue to travel, meet and experience other cultures like before. SAS has been named the best airline based on noise and emissions performance at Heathrow, following the introduction of more modern and fuel-efficient aircraft and are constantly looking for ways to reduce further our impact on the environment.

Today SAS CO2 offset all Youth and EuroBonus trips. Travelers on SAS are offered the opportunity to add biofuel (at cost) to their trip. Every component of every flight is scrutinized in order to remove plastic from all flight meals and reduce onboard weight. But our biggest investment is in new, modern and more energy efficient aircraft. Over the next few years,SAS will gradually be phasing ina new fleet. The new A320neo and A321neo LR (Long Range) aircraft from Airbus use 15-18 percent less fuel than the models they are replacing, and the new A350s from the same supplier use 30 percent less fuel than the A340s they are replacing.
