With sales growing by double-digit figures, Denmark has the highest proportion of organic food sales

Danish shoppers are likely to purchase more organic foods as part of their shopping than any other country, new figures have shown. The new numbers from Statistics Denmark show the increasing popularity of organic produce for Danes in the last few years.

Total sales of organic food in Denmark increased by 14% between 2017 and 2018, reaching an overall value of 12.9 billion Danish kroner.

The Swiss research institute Agriculture FiBL has reported that during 2017 13.3% of the total food sold in Denmark during the period was organic, placing it as the leading country in the world for consuming organic food, followed by Sweden.

Minister for the Environment and Food Jakob Ellemann-Jensen said, “Part of our strength (in Denmark) is that you can find lots of organic produce in local supermarkets and not just in specialised stores. We want to bring that idea to other countries.”

“The proportion of organic food in Danish shopping baskets has increased dramatically. That’s why there’s huge potential for increased export.”
